Recovered cases have surged to 4,020, up 211 from the day-ago report, and active cases fell below the 2,000 threshold for the first time to 1,881.
Active cases were at their highest on May 1 at 3,214. Since then, recovered cases have always outpaced new cases within a 24-hour frame.
Eighty people are currently in hospital, with 17 in intensive care units. “It is encouraging to see these numbers coming down from last week because it means fewer people are experiencing severe outcomes from this virus,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health said, referring to the hospitalization rate.
“It also means our health care system has capacity to handle potential additional COVID-19 cases if needed,” she added.
Deaths have reached 115, up one from the last report. Eighty-four of those deaths occured at continuing care facilities.
Below is a breakdown, by health zones, of COVID-19 cases across the province.
- Calgary Zone – 1,213 active cases and 2,761 recovered cases
- South Zone – 554 active cases and 567 recovered cases
- Edmonton Zone – 59 active cases and 425 recovered cases
- North Zone – 34 active cases and 171 recovered cases
- Central Zone – 17 active cases and 78 recovered cases
- There are 6 cases in zones that are yet to be confirmed.
